You made it! The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) has ended, and your Medicare plan for 2026 is now locked in. But what happens next?
Here’s what you can expect:
- Your new plan takes effect January 1, 2026.
Until then, your current 2025 plan remains active. If you made changes during AEP, those adjustments won’t kick in until the new year. - Watch for your new member ID card.
Plans usually mail these out in December. Keep your new card in your wallet and bring it to your first doctor’s appointment in 2026. - Review your plan materials.
Your plan will send a welcome packet or Evidence of Coverage. Take a few minutes to read through it and get familiar with your new benefits, provider networks, and prescription coverage. - Missed AEP? You may still have options.
If you didn’t make changes but realized you should have, don’t panic. Medicare Advantage has its own Open Enrollment Period (Jan. 1–Mar. 31, 2026). During that time, you can:
- Switch to another Advantage plan, or
- Go back to Original Medicare.
