National Eye Exam Month: Eye Condition Prevention and Detection

August is National Eye Exam month, which is an excellent reminder to schedule an annual comprehensive eye exam. Eyes have long been known as the window to the soul, but they’re also a window into your overall health. According to the National Eye Institute (NEI) having a comprehensive dilated eye exam can be critical in detecting and preventing eye conditions, including:

  • Glaucoma, damage to the optic nerve, often accompanied by increased eye pressure
  • Cataracts, a clouding of the eye
  • Diabetic retinopathy, causing damage to the blood vessels in the back of the eye
  • Macular degeneration, which gradually degrades central vision
Even if you’re not suffering from any vision problems or eye irritations, many serious eye diseases have few or no symptoms. An optometrist can spot the early signs of diseases before major damage has set in.
