“Enjoy the sunshine—and stay safe!”, says Stacey Johnson.

Summer in Southwest Washington is a beautiful time of year, but it also comes with sun exposure, rising temperatures, and outdoor activities that can pose health risks—especially for seniors. At Your Insurance Gal Agency, we want to help you enjoy the season safely while taking full advantage of the benefits Medicare offers to support your well-being.

Here are some essential summer safety tips and Medicare-covered services to help you stay cool, protected, and healthy:

  • Wear Protective Clothing and Sunscreen

Even on cloudy days, UV rays can damage your skin. Seniors are more susceptible to skin damage and sun-related issues, so wearing light, long-sleeved clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses is a must. Apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher—and don’t forget to reapply every 2 hours.

Did you know? Some Medicare Advantage plans offer allowances for over-the-             counter health items, including sunscreen. Ask us if your plan qualifies!

  • Stay Hydrated

Older adults are more prone to dehydration, which can lead to fatigue, confusion, or even hospitalization. Aim to drink plenty of water, especially on hot days or when you’re outside. Avoid sugary or caffeinated drinks that can dehydrate you.

  • Schedule a Summer Wellness Visit

Medicare Part B covers an annual wellness visit with your doctor. This is a great time to review your medications, check vital signs, and discuss seasonal concerns like heat sensitivity or managing chronic conditions in the summer.

  • Know the Signs of Heat Exhaustion

Fatigue, dizziness, headache, and rapid heartbeat are all signs of heat-related illness. Stay indoors during peak heat (usually between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.), and use fans or air conditioning when needed. If you start feeling symptoms, act quickly—cool down, hydrate, and seek medical help if needed.

  • Take Advantage of Local Resources

Many community centers in Vancouver, Ridgefield, Washougal, and Battle Ground offer air-conditioned spaces, hydration stations, and social activities that keep seniors engaged and safe. Check Vancouver Parks & Recreation or your local senior center for summer programs.
